Cultural Awareness Assignment – written assignment focused on the meaning of culture and how it can impact individual values, habits, and lifestyles. Students will complete a 3 page written assignment that incorporates reflection and analysis of concepts about culture and is based upon assigned readings from the textbook, AOTA Official Documents, and peer reviewed journal articles. Students will also include reflections based on their own culture and experiences. * Specific assignment guideline and Rubric for Content will be provided.

1. Read Ch. 4 and the case study of Nangane in chapter 4 (p. 61-78) (attached)
2. Read the 3 following articles (attached):
1. Agner, J. (2020). The Issue Is—Moving from cultural competence to cultural humility in occupational therapy
2. AOTA. (2021). AOTA’s Guide to Addressing the Impact of Racial Discrimination, Stigma, and Implicit Bias on Provision of Services.
3. AOTA. (2020). Occupational Therapy’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Personal Cultural Perspective (12 points):
Identify and describe how your own culture influences your views about health.
Identify and describe an overview of specific behaviors, routines, and any rituals that are grounded in your culture and how they influence your state of health.
Give at least two specific examples.
Occupational Therapy perspective on culture and health:
Identify and describe key aspects of health as viewed through the lens of occupational therapy (hint see OTPF-4 for content about occupations and views on health). Based on readings, how is health defined? Discuss the relationship between culture and health. What factors contribute to and/or impact state of health?
Draw upon content from the assigned readings in your textbook, OTPF-4, and the AOTA assigned articles to inform your response. (Discuss the Agner article in the section below).
Client’s cultural Perspective:
Based on the Case Story of Nangane, summarize how the cultural context influenced Nangane’s health care plan.
Identify similarities and differences in your own culture and Nangane’s culture.
Consider if you were Nangane’s occupational therapist. Describe how you would plan to respect her culture while providing occupational therapy services.
Article Summary – This section pertains to the Agner article
Provide a brief summary of the article by Agner (2020). What is the author’s main point? Describe key concepts.
Discuss your reaction to the concept of cultural humility.
