Home School Connection Contains
HI EVERYONE. I HOPE ALL IS WELL. DEPENDING UPON YOUR EDITION, FAMILY ACTIVITIES MIGHT BE ON ANOTHER PAGE IN YOUR EDITION SO READ CAREFULLY. BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE FROM A PRIOR STUDENT THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL AS YOU DESIGN YOUR ACTIVITY.
SAMPLE OF AN ACTIVITY The following is what I would write in the weekly newsletter to send home to parents, along with the contents to complete the activity at home with their children.
Hello parents,
We are continuing our exploration of signs of spring, and bugs / insects, this week at school. In your child’s backpack, you will find a paper bag that contains the following items; a small paper plate, a zip lock bag, three small pieces of modeling clay, six google eyes, and eight small pipe cleaners that are about two inches in length. Please read Lady Bug Girl and Bumblebee Boy, by David Soman and Jacky Davis to your child. Following the book reading, I would like you to explain to your child that they have been learning a lot about insects at school. Ask them questions like “where have you seen bugs at your school?” “Have you found bugs at your school?” “What colors are the bugs?’ “Are they large like a rock, or tiny like a raisin?” “What are the body parts of a bug / insect?” Tell your child that we learned that an insect has a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. Then ask them, “How many legs do insects have?” (They have six). Once you have finished your conversation about bugs / insects, the art materials are for your child to create their own bug / insect. There is no right or wrong way to do this activity. Please place their completed “bug sculpture” on the provided paper plate inside the zip lock bag, and send it back to school with your child. Students will be given the opportunity to present their sculpture to the class during “show and tell” the following week. Thank you very much; I hope you are your child enjoy the activity, and I look forward to seeing all of your children’s unique creations! Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
Prior to completing this assignment, review the suggested family activity on page 91 of your Edwards text. Also, read the guided imagery and multiculturalism section beginning on page 90 of the same text and view the Workshop 8 video. Complete the following: Create a home-school connection activity related to feelings and images.
Your activity must include
an introduction to the activity describing the purpose of the activity to parents and how it relates to what is being learned in school (you will have to imagine here that you are in the midst of a particular unit)
a list of the contents of the “bag” (all the items that need to be included for the parent to complete the activity)
complete step-by-step instructions for the parents,
require the reading of a children’s book to set the stage for or end the activity–require an artistic experience (this could be guided imagery, drawing, dancing, painting, drama, etc.)
Provide the complete home-school connection activity in your post to the Home-School Connection Discussion to share with your peers. Your replies within this discussion should be geared toward providing feedback and possible ways to improve the activity. The great benefit of everyone posting their activities is that you can copy the ones you like and save them for your own personal adaptation or use later!
Answer the above questions in 2 or more paragraphs and post your original response to the appropriate discussion area using the Discussion link found in the class tools menu. You should feel free to search for additional readings and resources on these topics and share with your classmates.
This discussion activity assesses students’ achievement of the following module objective: Create a home-school connection activity related to feelings and images.
